USB Knoppix 5.3.1 This tutorial will show you how to install Knoppix Linux version 5.3.1 to a USB flash drive using Windows. Knoppix is based on Debian GNU/Linux and includes hundreds of useful applications. Here we will show you how to make your own Portable Knoppix 5.3.1 from the Live DVD. You can then boot your portable version of Knoppix Linux from any PC that fully supports USB boot. Note that you will need a large capacity USB flash drive for this tutorial. We personally used a 16GB OCZ ATV flash drive, however an 8GB flash drive should do fine.

You’ll need the following to create a Portable Knoppix:

  • 8GB or Larger USB Flash Drive
  • Windows PC to perform the conversion (XP or Vista)
  • Knoppix Linux ISO
  • HP USB Format tool
  • fixkp531.exe
  1. Download the HP USB format tool and format your stick using a Fat32 file system
  2. Download fixkp531.exe and run, a USB-Knoppix folder is created
  3. Download the Knoppix Linux 5.3.1 DVD ISO and move it to the USB-Knoppix folder
  4. Click fixkp531.bat from the USB-Knoppix folder and follow the onscreen instructions
  5. Reboot your PC and set your system BIOS or Boot Menu to boot from the USB device, save your changes and reboot
  6. Upon reboot, you should have a successful launch of Knoppix 5.3.1 from your USB memory stick.

Persistence Feature: To enable the persistence feature, you will need to use a second USB flash drive to store the persistent image. After creating the image, you can move it back to the bootable Knoppix flashdrive and save your changes on the same device your booting from. The tutorial for creating a persistent Knoppix image is available HERE.

Enjoy! ;)
