USB Linux Mint install from Windows

The following USB Linux Mint tutorial covers how to install, boot and run Linux Mint from a USB device using Windows. Linux Mint is a popular remix of Ubuntu Linux. Originally launched as a variant of Ubuntu with integrated media codecs, Linux Mint has developed into a very user-friendly Linux distribution. Currently maintained by Clement Lefebvre, more information about Linux Mint can be found at the Official Linux Mint site.

You’ll need the following to make a Linux Mint Live USB:

  • 1GB or Larger USB Flash Pen Drive
  • Linux Mint ISO
  • HP USB format tool (optional)
  • fixmint2.exe
  1. Download the HP USB format tool and format your stick using a Fat16 or Fat32 file system
  2. Download and launch fixmint2.exe, a LinuxM folder is created
  3. Download the Linux Mint ISO and copy it to the LinuxM folder
  4. From the LinuxM folder, run fixmint.bat and follow the onscreen instructions
  5. Reboot your PC and set your system BIOS or Boot Menu to boot from the USB device, save your changes and reboot booting from the USB memory stick

Upon reboot, you should have a successful launch of USB Linux Mint (Portable Linux Mint) from your memory stick.
