The following tutorial explains how to run MCNLive from within a running Windows XP or Vista operating environment without rebooting. This is accomplished by using Qemu virtual machine emulation software. MCNLive can be run from a folder on your Windows PC or from a folder on your USB flash drive or other portable device. In addition, a loopfile is included within the changes.img. This image is mounted as an ext3 partition during persistent boot allowing you to save and restore changes made on subsequent boots. Note that the image will hold up to 244MB worth of data.

Basic essentials for Qemu MCNLive:

  • Windows host PC (Vista or XP)
  • QMCN.exe
  • MCNLive ISO
  • Optional (1GB+ USB flash drive)

How to run MCNLive from Windows without rebooting:

  1. Download and launch QMCN.exe, a QMCN folder is created
  2. Download the MCNLive ISO and copy it to the QMCN folder
  3. Click the QMCN.bat file to start the MCNLive operating system
  4. Select the option to "Boot with persistent changes"

Qemu commands to use while running MCNLive:

Click anywhere within the Qemu Window to use MCNLive

Press Ctrl+Alt to switch to and from the Host desktop

Press Ctrl+Alt+F to toggle full screen on or off

Press Ctrl+Alt+2 to switch to the Qemu Monitor (and type help for command list)

Press Ctrl+Alt+1 to switch from Qemu Monitor back to Linux
